News And Notes £9O Benefit For Braille Club. On behalf of the '’Wellington Braille Club, Mrs. J. R. Boyd and Miss Bui Van Stavcren, who organized the recent bridge drive, wish to thank all who made up tables and generously contributed toward making the drive such a success. The chib has by more than £9O. W.D.F.U. Afternoon In Lower Hutt. Mrs. Stevenson, president, welcomed a number of visitors nt the monthly meeting of tlic Lower Hutt branch of the W.D.F.U. Parcels are to be packed during the month for husbands aud sons of members serving overseas, many useful articles having been contributed by members. A social afternoon was held recently nt the home of Mrs. D. S. Milne, Totara Crescent. It was reported that damage amounting to £2OO was done to the W.D.F.U. rest-room at Awapuni in the recent earthquake. A number of handkerchiefs for patriotic parcels were given by members, who also knit energetically for men of the Merchant Navy. A talk was given by Mrs. W. A. Riddell on the historical, educational and agricultural aspects of life in Canada. A shoulder spray was presented to the speaker by Mrs. Gillingham. League of Mothers’ Meetings. This month's meeting of the League of .Mothers, Johnsonville branch, was controlled by an able committee of members, with Mrs; 11. C. 'Morris as president and Mrs. Watson, secretary. A talk on Norway was given by Mrs. Carswell! 'Mr. G. Morrison sang, and elocutionary items were given by Miss Lola Kench. Two numbers by the glee singers completed an enjoyable programme. Members continue to hand in many beautifully-knitted soldiers’ comforts.
Mrs. Gaunt presided over a good attendance of members and friends at this month's meeting of the Island Bay-Ber-hainpore branch of the League of Mothers. An address by Mrs. Ewen on the sanctity of marriage, two songs by the league choir, and a solo _by Mrs. Goldstone, were much appreciated. Papier Maclie Work. To make papier mache splints and other articles for patriotic purposes members of the Kohutara Women's Institute have arranged to meet weekly. Date loaves entered for a competition at the June monthly meeting were later sent to the Anzac Hospital in Featherston. Mrs. Elbe presided, and gave a report on the recent institute conference at Carterton. Emergency Equipment Made. A line display of articles made from papier mache was shown at the July meeting of the Stokes Valley Women's Institute. Four members were responsible for the work, which is to be given to the Stokes. Valley Emergency Hospital. A number of knitted squares were handed in for the making of warm quilts, and a large number of tins of shortbread for soldiers resulted from the competition set for the month. Mrs. Warmington and Mrs. Robertson contributed the best batches. An amusing play reading, “In the Cellar,” was Staged by Airs. Dowse and her drama group, and Airs. Baker sang. Airs. Summers, who presided, told members that another quota of parcels had been forwarded to soldiers overseas.
