Returns Of Tyres And Tubes Everyone who has new motor tyres or tubes, including private individuals, firms or corporations, must make a return of such tyres by Monday. A provision requiring this return is contained in a control notice gazetted last evening. New tyres and tubes are defined in the notice as those which have run 1000 miles or less, but those on the four wheels of a vehicle and the spare tyre usually carried are excluded.

Petrol Stations Close Tomorrow.' Petrol stations will not be open for business tomorrow, Anzac Day. They will also be closed, as usual, on Sunday. Essential Undertaking. The Government Printing and Stationery Department, Wellington, has been declared an essential undertaking.

Street Fight. Charged with fighting outside a hotel in the city on Wednesday night, Victor Alfred Bruce, seaman, aged 23, and Angus Arnold Milne, soldier, aged 29, appeared before Mr. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday. The magistrate fined. Milne £l. and dismissed the charge against Bruce. Retaining Walls. Now that the restrictions on the use 'of cement have been lifted, the staff of the Wellington city engineer is in a position to push on with certain works on the season’s list. These works include the construction of several concrete retaining walls rendered necessary by the destruction caused in the great rainstorm in October last.

Fire At Hospital. Damage estimated at £7OO was done to the laundry block in the Mangonut District Hospital on Wednesday night by a fire, believed to have been caused by a spark from a chimney lodged in the'roof above the boiler. Modern machinery installed hist year was damaged but it is considered that it can be salvaged.—P.A.

Soldiers’ Winter Quarters. An assurance that work was being pushed forward as quickly as possible so that soldiers in New Zealand would have more comfortable quarters during the winter was given by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, at the recent conference of the New Zealand Labour Party, according to the official report just issued.

Old Newtown School. At a meeting of householders in the Newtown School this week a resolution was passed demanding the demolition of the old building, which for the past two years has been in use as a public hospital, and, further, calling upon the Wellington Education Board to give immediate attention to the school grounds (which were stated to be in a deplorable condition) 'before pupils of the school are injured.

Boys’ Institute ’Building. Plans aud specifications for the enlargement and improvement of the Boys’ Institute Building, in Wellington, were well advanced when tlie outbreak of war iu the Pacific Ocean made a postponement of the work necessary, states the annual report of the institute It is stated that the year has been very difficult, the work having suffered through lack of staff and limited accommodation.

Shooting Season. Tlie suspension of tiie game shooting season this year, as recently announced in a Ministerial statement, is provided for in regulations gazetted last evening. It is stated that the notification under the Annual Protection and Game Act published in the Gazette on Marcii 27, which declared an open season for certain game, shall have no force or effect. No licence to take or to kill game will be operative this year.

Patrol Liltinches. Au amendment to tbe Naval Del'eitee Regulations gazetted last night provides for more liberal treatment for the owners of patrol launches in the case of damages sustained by launches in the course of their duties. The uew regulations provide that the Navy will pay for damage to patrol vessels except in eases where (he damage is intentional. Previously the regulations provided that payment, would not be made if negligence on tlie part of tlie owner was proved.

E.P.S. Electricity Unit. .Members of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board’s staff who under Ute compulsory E.P.S. enrolment have been placed in units not connected with their trade, are to be rransferred back to a special electrical unit, it was stated at yesterday's meeting of tlie board. letter from the Electricity Controller, Mr. F. T. M. Kissel, stated that regulations had been drafted which would enable Hie transfer to be made. The engineer ami general manager ot the board, Mr. E. F. Hollands, described as an essential duty the looking after ot electricity distribution and supply in an emergency.
