BATTLES ON PANAY ISLAND

Repeated Enemy Attacks LONDON, April 22. In the Philippines, today’s Washington communique says, enemy attacks on the Manila Bay fortresses yesterday were limited to a few dive-bombing raids on Fort Hughes and Fort Drum. A Washington communique says that on Panay enemy troops are attacking the defenders’ positions near San Renigo and Valderrama, in the south-west of the island. Repeated Japanese attacks in overwhelming numbers have forced the American troops to withdraw from Lambunnao, at the foot of the mountains in the centre of Panay. Over the neighbouring island of Negros, enemy air reconnaissance is reported, and a communique from General MacArthur’s headquarters reported Japanese naval activity in the Visayan Sea, just north of Negros to the east of Panay. There are no recent reports from Cebu. Vichy radio stated that 3000 United States troops were encircled in the mountains on the island of Panay.
