SUGAR RATION
First Registrations Yesterday AMENDED COUPONS RULE Registration with grocers for the sugar ration began yesterday, but there was no rush by the public generally to hand in their coupon book counterfoils. There are reported to be a number of cases where people endeavoured to effect registration before the announced date, and in some cases they handed in the wrong counterfoils.
Customers are requested to fill in the counterfoils- of their ration books before they take them to their suppliers. It was pointed out yesterday that by doing this the grocers would be saved a tremendous amount of extra work, and that it would facilitate things considerably. An amendment has been made by the Food Controller, Mr. Thomas, to the rules governing the use of coupons as issued in the ration books. This provides for coupons being available over a four-weekly period instead of purely on a weekly basis. It is stated in rule No. 5 in the ration books that coupons for any particular article subject to rationing must be used from week to week and are not usable in subsequent weeks; in fact, unused coupons have to be destroyed.
The Food Controller’s a'teration now permits of "saving up” of coupons for the four weeks, but does not permit of "cashing-in” of coupons ahead of the week for which they are allotted. Thus, No. 1 coupon is available in the first week, Nos. 1 and 2 in the second week, Nos. 1,2, and 3 in the third week, and Nos. 1 to -4 in the fourth week. The change will be appreciated by those peoulb, particularly in country districts, who do not visit their market centre each week.
During last 'Keek 1,060,97!) ration books were issued throughout New Zealand.
