ENEMY ATTACKED IN NORTH LUZON
Corregidor Flag Flies High WASHINGTON, April 19. The 1 p.m. war communique says that a small force of Americans and Filipinos, operating in the mountains of northern Luzon, successfully raided enemy outposts at San Nicolas-, Natividad and 1 Tayug, all in Pangasinian Province, destroying military stores and inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. Stubborn fighting is continuing in Cebu and Panay Islands. Raids and shellings of Corregidor continue, but the American counterfire lias silenced at least four, and possibly five, Japanese guns in the past few days. The Corregidor flag on top of its 100-foot pole, was a casualty for a few minutes yesterday when a Japanese shell- fragment struck the pole aud cut the halyard, but Captain Brewster Gallup, Sergeant Ezra Smith, and a Filipino, Honorio Punongbayen, rushed to the pole, gathered the descending flag in their arms, then, amid bursting shells, repaired the halyard and rehoisted the proud flag. General Wainwright has officially commended tlie gallant trio.
