LONG ALERTS IN TOKIO

Fear Of American Bombers GRIM WARNINGS

(By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, April 20. The “New York Times” reports that the Japanese people were reminded grimly that the American bombers might return when two new air-raid alarms, each lasting for two hours, were sounded yesterday in Tokio and other parts of the country. The Japanese “Asahi Shimbun” warns the public that widespread attacks are now possible. The London newspapers, like those throughout the Allied countries, hail Saturday’s attack as one of the most brilliant strokes of the war. “The Times” states that this American exploit, together with Brigadier-General Royce’s brilliant air expedition into the I’liilippines, must be causing serious anxiety among the Tokio strategists. “On this side of the Atlantic it is certain that our reply to the Battle of Britain has opened,” it adds.

New York reports an assertion b.v Tokio official radio that planes which bombed Tokio and other cities came from aircraft-carriers, which sped off immediately after they had launched the planes. The machines flew to China after the completion of the raids.

Tokio radio said that surveys showed that the Japanese transportation and communication facilities were functioning without important alterations after the American bombing raids. The only accomplishment, it was said, was the wounding of children in the primary schools and the killing and wounding of patients in hospital. Chungking reports that though the Chinese habitually ignore the Japanese broadcasts, thousands have excitedly listened to Tokio radio.
