CONFERENCE IN MAY

Extending United Nations’ Air Programme WASHINGTON, April 17. A. joint statement issued by President Roosevelt and the Canadian Prime .Minister. Mr. Mackenzie King, said that a conference at which all. the United Nations with air training programmes in the United States or Canada will be invited to participate will be held in Ottawa early in May, to further the united military efforts, extend the air programme, and make the most effective use of all resources of personnel. Mr. Mackenzie King told the Canadian Press that Canada has not made definite commitments to any part of the Allied war effort apart from longstanding long-range commitments of supplies to Britain and Hie United States, but it was quite possible, tiiat Canadian resources would go to Australia as part of the allocation now being attempted by the United Nations in consultation.

There would be no independent action by Canada to aid one particular country. Only 10 per cent, of Canada's war output, was kept for Canada's own fighting forces at home and abroad. The remainder of Canadian munitions had been committed months ahead to Britain and the United States, but these might go to whatever front the combined Chiefs of Staff Committee in Washington and the Munitions Assignment Boards in London and Washington might decide.
