Deposits which apixtar to be promising have been located in south Westland. . Diatomite is stated to occur m the Rotorua, Wanganui and Oamaru districts. It is the. silicious skeleton of a unicellular plant which grows in water, and sinks to the bottom to form deposits when the plants die. It is used for insulating purposes. At places in Rotorua it can be dug out of banks with a shovel. It is also used extensively for filtering purposes witli oils’, sugar, beer, and wine.
