COUPON BOOKS
First Week’s Distribution Over 1,000,000 Over a million ration books, it is estimated, were issued, in New Zealand last week. This is two-thirds of the expected total requirements. Tlie central issuing point, the Chief I’ost Office and tlie suburban post offices in Wellington are carrying on with the distribution of tlie books under the existing arrangements, but, where it is possible for applications to be dealt witli during normal business hours in other places, the 7 to 9 p.m. period is not now being continued. During the five days of last week to Friday night, 958,594 ration books had lieen issued in tlie Dominion, including 207,244 on Friday itself. Offices were open on Saturday morning, and though the figures for that period are not yet available, it was expected that tlie million mark would lie passed by the weekend. Vp till Friday night 156,603 ration hooks had lieen issued in tlie Wellington poslal district, for which the estimated requirements are 207,891. It is considered that, tlie response in general lias been very good, but on this occasion there lias been a. material incentive to spur the pub/Ic on.
