PARCELS FOR BRITAIN
Alternative Addresses Recommended GIFT OF FOODSTUFFS Information now' reaching the New Zealand Post Office indicates that some gift parcels of foodstuffs for people in the United Kingdom have not been delivered, either because the addressees are unknown at the addresses given or because they have gone away without recording their new addresses with the Post Office. The Postmaster-General, Mr. Webb, stated last evening that most people sending gifts of food to the United Kingdom would wish the parcels to be delivered if not to the intended recipient then to someone else who could, in these abnormal times, make good use of the food. Most of the parcels reported as nudeliveryble could no doubt have been satisfactorily disposed of had the senders furnished an alternative address, as provided for on the Custona? declaration.
The Minister urged all persons posting gift parcels to give an alternative address for delivery. If a sender did not wish to name a particular individual as the alternative addressee he could, direct that the parcel be handed over to a charitable institution or other deserving organization. Alternatively, it was open to a sender to direct that if hie parcel were not delivered it should be returned to him. To reduce-, the demands on shipping, however, it was desired .that as few parcels as possible be returned. “People in New Zealand who follow these suggestions,” said Mr. Webb, “will not only help appreciably the British Post Office but will assist very materially in the disposal to tlie best advantage of the valuable food contained in the parcels."
