SUNDAY DANCES FOR AMERICANS

Request In New South Wales (Received April 17, 7.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 17. A conference called'ty the Chief Secretary, Mr. Bffddeley, today decided to urge the Government of New South Wales to authorize normal week-day entertainment for the American and Australian troops on Sundays. Major Lynn Cowan, manager of an entertainment unit of the United States Army, said: "The American troops in Australia for months have been putting up with the existing conditions without complaint, but we can no longer carry on. We believe you are big enough and fair enough to change your laws and open two motion picture shows, a theatre and a dance hall on Sundays. "We are not here to revolutionize any laws of Australia, nor are we here as amusement or dance-hall builders. M e have a job to do, and we intend to do it. Your police will tell you that no more law-abiding and gentlemanly group of people has ever been seen in Australia than our boys.”

Church representatives at the conference bitterly opposed the arguments of speakers wiio supported the motion iu favour of Sunday entertainment.
