Boon For Maoris Near Lake Hunia, Marton
Maoris near Lake Hunia, Marton, are getting one of their delicacies, eels, by the hundreds, and with no effort except the carting away. A party took 200 in one night recently from tire Wellington Acclimatization (Society’s trap at the lake, where about a ton ot eels have already passed through. Mr. T. Tlie eels had been on tlie run, stated Air. Andrews, and parties of Maoris came along nightly to collect them. The eeis averaged three pour..ls each, and, he thought, were the male long tin eel. The females were large, running to 20 pounds, lie expected three more runs —the female long liu, male short tin, and female short fin. He bad to clear tlie trap hourly; his usual bed-time on this job was after 2 a.m.
