OBITUARY

Mr. John Black

The death occurred in Eastbourne recently of Mr. John Black, J.l*. Born in Sunderland, England, in 1865, he came to New Zealand in 1884. in the sailing ship Canterbury, and took up farming six years later at Oxford. Hi 1900 he bought a sheen run at Takitu, Waimate, and sold out 12 years later. During this period he served on the hospital board, the Timaru High School Board, and the harbour board, and as mayor of Waimate. He was also a lieutenant in the Army Motor Reserve. He retired from public life in 1915, when he removed to Blenheim, where he purchased the Leatham sheep station. In 1920 he settled in Eastbourne, and was custodian of the borough tennis courts for 13 years. Mr. Black was a student of medicine, for he came of a family which included 11 doctors. He was twice married. There were four children by the first marriage. His second wife and their daughter Hazel survive him. Mr. Lionel Follett

The death has occurred, says a “Dominion” Special Service message from Wanganui, of Mr. Lionel Follett, w'ho was well known in commercial circles in Wanganui. Born in Cannings Court, Dorset, England, Mr. Follett was educated at Wimborne Grammar School, and as a young jnan went to South Africa, where he joined the staff of a Cape Town bank. During the Boer War he was a member of the Cape Town Armed Constabulary. He came to New Zealand in 1906. and, on arrival at Wanganui, joined the “Chronicle” commercial staff, later going to Wellington, where he joined the commercial staff of “The Dominion.” Later he again returned to Wanganui. For the past 15 yeears he was the Main Trunk representative for Johnstone and Co. He was keenly interested in bowling and amateur theatricals. He was a member of Lodge Moutoa. He is survived by a wife and one daughter, Mrs. H. Watkins, New Plymouth.
