BISCUITS FOR ARMED FORCES

Production Increase “Biscuit manufacturers who have been engaged on the service biscuit contract for the last 10 months met ’in Christchurch last weekend to consider a request from the Food Controller for a large increase in the contract,” said the secretary of the New Zealand Biscuit and Confectionery Manufacturers’ Association, Mr. D. I. Macdonald, yes“An officer from the Food Controller’s Department was present and explained fully the circumstances giving rise to the request, and the manufacturers agreed to reorganize their businesses to meet the substantial production now required of them for war purposes. “This adjustment will be' made immediately and naturally means some reduction. in the varieties and quantities of biscuits which will be available for domestic consumption. However, the general public can rest assured that there will be ample biscuits available to meet all normal domestic requirements, and except that certain varieties may disappear from the, market it is unlikely that the public will lx- greatly affected. It has been decided, however, that no biscuits will in future be put up in packets, and. beyond a small quantity of pocketed biscuits now in the shops of retailers, all biscuits will in future have to be bought loose. “With the assistance of the workers ’in the industry, who have already materially assisted toward meeting the increased production of the last 10 months, the factory proprietors feel that the substantially increased volume of production now required can be obtained.”
