RAIDS ON MALTA
Defence Very Strong LONDON, January 19. A senior army officer back from Malta speaks of the Axis air offensive there. He said the enemy’s raids had “stoked up a little,” but that the defences were very strong, and if the Germans attempted a landing they would pay for it very dearly. Malta was a nasty thorn in the flesh of the enemy, who was doing his best to neutralize the island. There were continuous air raids, but on the whole they had not done a great deal of damage. Last May the Germans had left tlie island to the Italians, who hated the barrage and dropped their bombs anywhere. Then the Gestapo listened in to see that the Italians did not turn back too soon. In the middle of December the Germans had returned, and they had displayed more courage. Defending Malta was a difficult and a dangerous job, but the life of the troops garrisoned there was fairly pleasant, though they had to live m queer places.
