GALE DAMAGES NORTH ISLAND CAMP
Troops Evacuate Tents Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, January 8. A howling gale that, persisted for 24 hours tore down tents and did other damage at a military camp iu the central North Island area on Tuesday. Accompanied by torrential rain, lightning and thunder, the storm was oue of the worst experienced at the camp for some time. A stream running through the camp overflowed, flooding parts of the camp to a depth of one foot. Some buildings were completely marooue'd, the hospital and canteen being entirely surrounded by over a foot of water. Three bridges at the camp were seriously damaged, and two will probably have to be replaced. The men in tents had to carry out a hasty evacuation, and put up for the night in class rooms at a fighting vehicle school. All roadways in the camp were raging torrents during one part of the afternoon, and improvised bridges were brought into use to enable the men to proceed to meals. The flood waters had subsided today, and the jnen were busy repairing tents and drying their clothes.
