Man Power And War
Sir, —In any problem one should get ’down to fundamentals. If this country is invaded and we have to fight for our lives, our . kith and kin, and our homes, what happens to the pacifists, conscientious objectors, and so on? We are spending thousands of pounds in providing thoughtful camp accommodation for these people. Do we also propose to protect them with our fighting meh, or do we leave them to the enemy? If the Axis Powers invade us will they show mercy to the non-fight-ers,- or those who believe it is a “capitalist war,” or any other claptrap? Ask the Poles, the Russians, or any people who have been attacked. Their terrible answers should awake in us a sense of reality. I suggest a solution: Let every mau and woman be placed as is best for the State. If a man wilhnot fight, let him go to the front as a stretcher-bearer, or in some other non-combatant service. If he will do none of these things, shoot him. —I am, etc. —REALIST. Wellington, November 29.
