BETTER REPORT

Deolali Now Expected To Recover SIR CRUSOE TO RACE AGAIN Sunny Knight Better Than Ever By St. Simon. The Trentham winner Deolali was very lame after her race on the first day or the Waikato meeting. Her trouble was diagnosed as the (suspensory ligament and her owner-trainer, W. H. Hume, feared that she might not be able to race again and he did not expect to be able to move her from Te Rapa for at least a month. He w T as advised at the weekend that Deolali had apparently only ricked herself in the joint and was galloping round the paddock again on Sunday. It is now expected that she will reach home this week. Hume and his partner, O. Roberts, had the misfortune to lose Dady Tinkle a few months ago and the mishap to Deolali, a half-sister to Dady Tinkle, was a stroke of very bad luck. _ However, Hume is now hopeful that with a sped Deolali will be racing again in the autumn if not before.

A Short Spell. Lady Derby, who went close to winning a double at Levin on Monday, was left at her owner’s West Derby stud at Ohau to rest for a week or so, but 1. K. George will take her in hand again to tune her up for the holiday meetings. Lady Derby looked very well at Levin and she showed a brilliant turn of speed to run right away from Imperium and Legal in the hack sprint.

To Race Again. Sir Crusoe, one of the best handicap milers in commission last season, has done a light season at the stud, but is to be put into work again in the summer to prepare for autumn racing. In taking exercise in his paddock he appears to be quite sound again. First-Class Form. . Sunny Knight was impressive m his two sprint successes at the Levin meeting, specially on the second day when he carried 9.4 and beat Autolite and Duncannon, who rank among the best-class sprinters in the district. Sunny Knight is not such a keen galloper now as lie was in the winter, when he won all his races from the front. He went very kindly in behind for T. Kilgour and consequently ran on much better at the finish.

A Smart Hack. . , None of the hack sprinters racing at Levin impressed more than Saint lot, who won . race each day. He ’ l “‘L t ° overcome several handicaps on Monday after being hampered at the where he drew a wide posßmn. and j th half a mile to run it appeared impossible for him to get anywhere near a place. Yet he got up to win going a way in decisive style. Saint lor is one of the speedy Leighon breed and he created a big impression when lie won his first race, the Hastings Stakes, 13 ago, but he did not win again till last week. Judged on Levin form Samt Toi should hold his own in much stion a ei class.

Maiden Prospect. Jolly Ruler, a three-year-old by Ku a nut from Jolly, an Arausio mare descending from the Desert Gold family, looked like bringing off a in the last race at Levin. He led from barrier rise to within 100 yards of the post, when he was overtaken b-V Saint Tor Ladv Derby and Soutane, but finished a close fourth. He had only one start as a two-year-old, and Mondays wasTiis first for tl*e sen«on ITc is trained at Awapum by H. 1'• A llO1 ’I*’ 1 *’® 1 for Air F. G. Florence and on this showing should have excellent prospects in a maiden race. Ill A t nother member of the Waddell-family made his debut as a jockey- on Mondaj when G. Waddell, a younger brother of the successful apprentice .b. Waddell, rode Miss Leighon in the open sprint at Leun. He is probably the smallest boy riding at present, but he showed alertness in jumping his mount out first from Ao. 1. He 'is being tutored in the stable of G. vv. .New, who has given the turf some ot its best 1-a-ter-day riders, among them W. J. Broughton, G. _R. Tattersall ami the successful apprentices S. Waddell and H. P. Stewart.

Racing Unluckily. _ , , The Wellington-owned Leighon mare Soutane has been running honest races lately, but has had no luck and she was one of the unfortunate horses in the concluding event at Levin, finishing a WD close third. Soutane has been at a difheult position in the weights, earned by her good two-year-old fora and maintained by .placed form this season. She comes iii slightly better at Feilding this week. Disappointing. , On his Riccarton form Gunyah looked an excellent prospect in the Ihakara Handicap at Levin on Monday, but he failed. He secured a wonderful opening at the home turn when Auburn Lad carried the field out wide and he strode through to the front, but as soon as Hikorangi tackled him he gave in. Below Expectations. , , , , Distress Signal was solidly backed when he made his first appearance as a hurdler at Levin on Monday. He fell at the third fence because he was allowed to slow down to jump it. He jumped the first fence brilliantly with the pace on when accompanied by Majority.

Lost At The Start. . , On the strength of attractive work at home, Farcical was backed to third favouritism for the Juvenile Handicap at Levin, but he got away very badly and lost all chance in the first furlong. He is a solid brown colt 'by Phaileron Bay Irom Droll, a daughter of the imported mare. Drblatique, by Black Jester, and is raced by Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Chalmers, M ellington. He is trained nt Awmpuni by L. G. Morris. A Likely Improver. . Two thirds after meeting trouble in the running each time went to the credit of Metonymy at Levin and he may not be long in doing better. He is a big tour-year-old by Nightly and is closely related to Cheerful Lady. He is trained by A. Jenkins for Mr. C. A. Cameron, Masterton.

Offer For Llandaff. Last weekend Mr. A. D. Totter received a four-figure offer from Australia lor the sprinter Llandaff, but he replied that the horse was not for sale. Llandaff has won five of the 10 races he has had, and his owner stated on Monday that he is a certain starter at Ellerslie on Saturday if the track is dry.

Won for New Owner. When Lucrative won the valuable Eclipse Stakes at Flemington on Saturday he was carrying tlie colours of Ins new owner, an Indian sportsman. Luernlive is lobe shipped to India at an early dale. He was the undisputed Ihree-year-old champion of Australia last seas'on, when, after running second to Pandect in the A..T.C. Derby, he won tho Cnulheld Guineas, Victoria Derby, A.J.G. St. Leger, and Sydney Gup. He is a lour-yenr-old horse by Gay Lothario trom Balkan Star.

Trials in Auckland. One of the best efforts of the season at Taknnini was credited to Kraal and Court Favourite on Saturday when they ran a brilliant seven on the inside grass track in .1.29. Others to work well were Sleepy Fox, Dash o’ Dink, Kiatere Mnati, Two Pals and Tweedsmuir, over half a mile, and Miss Gay and First. Edition over five furlongs. At Ellerslie, Bonzo, Corot and Sir Simon did the best, half-miles, Sir Keynard and Miss I‘hal-

eron the beM lives, Cherry's Ticket the best six, and Golden Bonnet the best seven.

The King’s Good Season. During the flat racing season which has just closed in England His Majesty the King won 10 races, which is the best run enjoyed by the Royal stable for many seasons. The King's two-year-old Bahram colt Big Game was unbeaten.

A Wise Head. Asked if he had any excuse to make for Beau Vite’s defeat in the Melbourne Cup, trainer F. McGrath replied: “It Skipton and Sou of. Aurous hadn t started, Beau Vite would have won. ’

Foor Judgment. The ride on Skipton in the Melbourne Cup was offered first to H. Badger, then to J. Pnrtell and J. McLoud, and declined by each. The Sydney lightweight >v. Cook was engaged on the eve of Cup day. Not For Sale. Mr. J. J. Kitson, who presented Skipton to his wife before the colt hud raced, wanted to buy him back after lie had won the Victoria Derby, but the lady replied “not. for sale.’’

A Good Recovery. L. Gough, who was injured in the hurdle race on the third day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, lias made a good recovery, and has been discharged from the Christchurch Hospital. The extent ot his injuries were facial abrasions and a badly bruised chest. “The Watcher” Recovered. Mr. D. J. Gainey, racing editor of “The Dominion,” has recovered from a recent operation, and left hospital yesterday. He will resume work next week.
