GUARD OF AMERICAN TROOPS
Bauxite Mines In Dutch Guiana
WASHINGTON, November 24.
United States troops have been sent to Dutch Guiana, in the north of South America, to safeguard supplies of bauxite.
A White House statement said that the bauxite mines in .Surinam furnished approximately CO per cent, of the requirements of the aluminium industry of the United States. The industry was vital to the defence of the Western Hemisphere and the nations resisting aggression. It was, therefore, necessary that the safety of these mines should toe as completely assured as present conditions demanded. Normally the Netherlands Government would draw on new forces to strengthen the defences of Guiana, but in view of the present situation in the south-western Pacific it was thought inadvisable to follow that course. As the result of consultations with the Netherlands, it was agreed that an American army contingent should go to Surinam to co-operate wiffi the Netherlands forces.
