DOING FINE JOB
N.Z. Force May Link With Tobruk N.Z.E.F. Official News Sehvice. CAIRO, November 24. With the capture of Gambut the New Zealand Division struck hard at the enemy as the Eighth Army continued its drive into Libya. As Gambut was the enemy’s chief supply dump in the area, the enemy troops in the Halfaya and Sidi Omar zones are now virtually cut off from supplies. The water pipe from Bardia was also cut. With Indians attacking from the east, the New Zealanders to the west in the rear of the enemy in the Halfaya area are putting up a great fight. It is described as “a most extraordinary action” by military circles. Details of the lighting are few, as communication is possible only by plane. It is known, however, that a considerable amount of hand-to-hand fighting has probably taken place. The New Zealanders now control all the roads from Gambut. It is thought their objective is to join with the force from Tobruk.
It is emphasized that the enemy is not endeavouring to extricate his forces at present, but is fighting with determination. The New Zealanders are moving rapidly under improved weather conditions.
