GIRLS’ MARCHING

Hutt Valley Interhouse Association Defying the lowering skies and a heavy mist occasionally drifting across the ground, the Hutt Valley Interhouse Girls’ Association held its first annual display at the Lower Hutt Recreation Ground on Saturday and provided a large gathering with an enjoyable afternoon’s spectacle. Having been formed last March, the association is a young organziation, but seven teams were on the ground, on Saturday. In a speech before the display began the mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. Andrews, congratulated the Hutt Valley on the formation of the association. Such an association, he said, encouraged the spirit of co-operation among the girls. It was good for girls to develop espirit de corps and pride in their teams and loyalty to their firm. Pride in the place where their firm had its business led to pride in their country and pride in the Empire, which led to faith in the cause for which the Empire was fighting. Mr. Andrews pointed out that the teams were always ready to assist worthy causes, and just before the winter a team had travelled to. Masterton to lend its services to an effort to raise patriotic funds. That morning the men connected with the movement had proposed a postponement of the display because of the weather, but the enthusiasm of the girls had overridden them, and the girls had been justified by the interest shown by the public. Mr. Andrews thanked those who had assisted the association.

Marching displays occupied most of the programme, the teams that took part being British Buttons and Buckles, Ltd.', Colgate-Palmolive, Ltd., Lever Bros. (N.Z.), Ltd., No. 1, Lever Bros. (N.Z.), Ltd., No. 2, Griflin and Sons, Ltd., No. 1, Griflin and Sons, Ltd., No. 2, Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Co., Ltd. A popular manoeuvre with the teams was to form themselves into aV. Ball games, physical drill and an interhouse relay race also were presented as displays. Maori songs and poi dances were given by the Te Ropn Maori Entertainers, and music was provided by the Hutt Valley Pijie and Drum Band, the Lower Hutt Civic Band, the Petone Civic Band and three girl drummers of the interhouse association. Athletic contests held by the Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club and interspersed in the programme resulted as follows 880yds. Junior Handicap.—lL Poole, 20yds., 1 ; D. Ryan, 30yds., 2; Instoue, 20yds., 3. 100yds. Junior Handicap.—C. Horrible, syds., 1; Mair, 7yds., 2; Britell. 4yds., 3. One mile Cycle Handicap.—F. Mercer, 100yds., 1; G. Yule, 40yds., 2; M.
