Funds For Blind Institute And Hospital Patients
The Oriental Bay-Roseneath branch of the Women’s National Reserve, 'Wellington, held its final bridge party for the year in the E.S.U. rooms on Thursday There were nearly 120 guests present and the Institute for the Blind and women patients at Porirua hospital will benefit, as £l2/15/- was made. Mesdames O. N. Gillespie and W. U. Gledbill were in charge of the afternoon tea arrangements; Mrs. A. G. Bowater managed the “bring and buy’ stall and other helpers were the'eonvenor, Mrs. T. E. Walshe, and Mesdames H. Stringer, J. R. Kessell, AV. H. Zander, H. Parkinson and Flipp.
Two Birthday Cakes for Overseas. The November meeting of the Hamua Women's Institute took the form of a dance to celebrate the eleventh birthday. This proved a great success, both socially and financially. The president Mrs. Hobbs, welcomed all present,’ including members from the Konini and Hukanui Institutes. She explained that the custom was to have a birthday cake, but this year the institute had decided to b.ike a cake, seal ft and raffle it to be sent to a soldier overseas, the funds collected to be used for soldiers’ comforts. As the usual cake mixture proved too large for one tin two had been baked and a second prize would also be given. A bouquet was presented to Mrs. Hobbs on behalf of the Hamua members. Mrs. Burnett, president of the Bush Federation, sent a message of goodwill, and a telegram was received from an old member, Mrs. White, Masterton. Clan Mackay Party. . The Clan .Mackay Society’s social evening for November was held in the Blind Institute hall, Dixon Street, recentlv Items were contributed by the following artists: Mrs. Stirratt and Mrs Gunn, vocal solos; Maureen Dawson,’dances; Sandra Gunn, violin solo; Master Gunn, pipe selections.
