OBITUARY
Mr. Joseph John Beech
Second son of the late Mr. and Mis. George Beech, who came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Era iu 1800, Mr. Joseph John Beech, one of the oldest settlers of the district, died at his home, Tiraumea Road, Pahiatua, last week. Born at Ohariu tallej, Wellington, on September 27, 1867, Mr. Beech went to the Bush district at the a"e of 19, and purchased a section of some 500 odd acres of sheep country at Konini, which he successfully farmed till he retired some years ago. He married Miss Eileen Ryan, a niece of •the late Mr. P. Quirke, one of the earliest pioneers of the Konini district, and one of the most progressive farmers in the Bush of those days. The late Mr. Beech was held in the very highest re“anl and respect. He is survived by his wife, three married 'daughters— Mesdames M. Dalrymple (Masterton), E Judd (Palmerston North), A. Hancock (Marlborough) ; four sons, L. Beech (Waiouru Camp), J. W, Beech (Konini), P. F. Beech (Pahiatua), and J. B. Beech (overseas) ; two brothers, Frank aud George Beech, both of Pictoi The pall-bearers at the funeral were Messrs. Leo. Hughes, a nephew (Rotorua), Peter and Kevin Beech, nephews (Mangahao), F. Judd, son-in-law (Palmerston North), and C. 11. Hodgins (Tane), and J. Delehanty (Konini).
