FOUR APPEALS
Conscientious Objectors
Maintaining that war was against the laws of God, Stutrrt Shaw, storeman, whose appeal on the ground of conscientious objection was before the No. *1 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Wellington yesterday, said that lie had to be true to his ideals and lie was prepared to leave the consequences to God. Appeals on the ground of status and hardship were withdrawn. The board was informed by Sir. 15. Parry, counsel for appellant, that Shaw had previously appealed when called up for territorial service and the appeal had been dismissed. He had not departed from his previous attitude. The chairman, Mr. M. I'. Buckie: Actually, the appeal was heard twice on its merits and turned down both times.
Counsel said appellant felt he could not let the matter go by default. He was aged 23 and had married since the last appeal.
The chairman: He doesn’t appear to appreciate that he has any duty to look after his wife in the event of the country being attacked. Mr. Parry: Not by means of violence. The chairman : One can’t reason with a rattlesnake. The appeal was dismissed. An appeal by Timothy Joseph Patrick Long, clerk, on the ground of conscientious objection, was dismissed subject to non-combatant service. Appellant, who said he was aged 21 and a Roman Catholic, told the board that though he would not deny.that he owed a duty to his fellow-men, he was not willing to take part in the war. To the Crown representdtive, Mr. C. O. Bell, Long said lie was not prepared to do non-combatant work under military control because he believed it was all part of the war. Mr. Bell: You make no difference between an offensive and a defensive war?
Appellant: No, all war is wrong; The chairman : Would you be willing to live under German slavery? Appellant: War is by far the greatest slavery of all.
Evidence in support of the appeal was given by Timothy and Catherine Mary Long, parents of appellant. Halsey Lincoln Christian, clerk, aged 23, who said lie bad refused to report for medical examination, told the’board that he .protested against the whole system of war on Christian and economic grounds.
To Mr. Bell, appellant said the reason he had refused to undergo medical examination was that lie wanted to witness to his conscientious conviction, and if he were not passed lit for service lie would not have an opportunity of doing so as his appeal would not be gone on with. The appeal was dismissed. Rex Verdun Boyes appealed on conscientious grounds.
