BROKER CONVICTED
False Pretences
SYDNEY, November 12. Convicted of false pretences at the New castle quarter sessions, Victor Benbow Mclnnes, aged 39, broker, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. The. evidence disclosed that McInues, who was described, as “an associate of ‘go-getters’,” had falsely pretended to be the Rev. G. L. Rooke, and that he, as a representative of the New Zealand Government, was able to exchange shares in New Zealand Products, Limited, for other shares. The Rev. Mr. Rooke died at New castle two months ago. The police stated that Mclnnes was one of the principals in the National Trust building scandal. The judge, in passing sentence, said that many mejnbers of the community were heavy losers as the result of the activities of bogus share hawkers and frequently refrained from coming forward to disclose their misfortune.
