REPAIRING STORM DAMAGE

Cost In Wellington It was reported to the Wellington City Council by the works committee last night that instructions had been issued for work costing £3326 to be put in band to reinstate road reserves damaged during the recent storms. It was added that the cost of the general clearing of slips up to the end of October was £3126. Cr. W. Appleton, chairman of the works committee, said the council could not accept legal liability for damage done lo private property, though it would give all the service possible. Legislation had been passed giving the council authority to advance money for the purpose, but generally speaking, the council was not liable for the damage done to private properties. Each case would be dealt with on its merits, and fully investigated. There was a Jot of misapprehension on the part of the public, and it was desirable to announce the position. The council would endeavour to assist where possible, but where it was a question of building retaining walls on private property it had not the facilities nor the staff available to do the work.
