News And Notes From Town And Country Playreading a Success. Au . enjoyable evening -was held at the University Women’s Club recently, When E. McCracken’s play, “Quiet Wedding,” was reaa to members and friends. The cast included Mesdames E.' Culford Bell (guest reader), W. Moss, C. Ball, R. Waghorn, B. McKinlay, Keeton and Misses J. Atkinson, R. Beckway, E. McElea, M. Down, H. McLeod and M. Davies. Jill the cast entered into the spirit of this hilarious comedy. ' Musical items were given by Miss Mildred Griffin (piano'sblos) < and Miss Mifawney Davies-(songs), Miss Beekway (club secretary) arranged the programme. Free Kindergarten Jumble Sale. The Wellington Free Kindergarten Council will hold a jumble sale tomorrow at 196 Taranaki Street. A splendid collection of things has come to hand, and it is expected that the sale will be a great success. In conjunction with this sale a stall of children’s clothes has been organized and a produce stall. These, will be open in the afternoon from 3 p.m. till 5 p.m., any left-over goods being available during the jumble sale in the evening at 6 o’clock. ’ J ' ; - ■ Mothers will find a wonderful collection of clothes for their children at the children’s stall, and many summer problems of what to buy Will be solved. Friends of the kindergarten are asked to give these efforts every support, and are assured that they will find many valuable bargains both afternoon and evening.
Members Busy. Members of the Johnsonville. Women’s Institute are busy with knitting for men of the Merchant Navy and with other patriotic work. Hand-made baskets and rag rugs, made by southern institutes, were exhibited by Mr. S. Williams, tutor of adult education, who also demonstrated the art of spinning. Mrs. Wright, president, was in the chair. Mrs. Fitt gave a report on the bi-annual council meeting.
Annual Gift Tea. The public is cordially invited to attend the annual gift tea, which will be held at the Home o£ Compassion, Island Bay, on Saturday, from 2 till 4 o’clock.
WJJK Effort. A delightful afternoon, in aid of funds of the Lower Hutt branch of the Women’s National Reserve, nursery section, was given recently at the home of Mrs. Boyd, Bloomfield Terrace. The reception rooms were bright with spring flowers and a well-stocked bring-and-buy stall did good business. The guests, who included a large number of members and supporters of the W.N.R., were received by Mrs. F. Campbell, president, and Mrs. J. A. Peterson, secretary. Vocal items by Mrs. Noel Taylor and Mrs. Johnston were enjoyed, and a satisfactory sum will be forwarded to the Porirua Mental Hospital for Christmas gifts for women inmates.
Final League of Mothers’ Meeting. Mrs. D. Wedekind presided over a large attendance of members at the November meeting of the Moera-Wai-wetu League of Mothers, which was the final gatherng for the year. Mrs. W. Carey gave a demonstration of icing a Christmas cake. A pianoforte duet was given by Mesdames K. Look and M. Meyrick, and the choir, with Mrs. P. Dunkley as accompanist sang Christmas carols. A competition, the prize for which was given by Mrs. H. W. Kersley, was won by Mrs. Melville. Guests of honour were Mrs. Shearer and Mrs. Cheesman, president and treasurer respectively, of the Eastbourne League of Mothers.
