KEEN FINISHES ON OAKS DAY

Salutation’s Success WINS FOR WARDRESS AND WILD FOX

(By Telegbaph—From St. Simon.) CHRISTCHURCH. November 12. There were several keen finishes on Oaks Day at Riccarton, for which the weather was again line and the track in excellent order. The race for the Canterbury Cup provided plenty of thrills in the last lurlong, four horses going past the post almost in line, with Wardress gaining the victory by half a head from Lambourn, who looked a . little unlucky. Saluation won the Oaks Stakes in a close finish from Yin d’Honneur, who was cut back at the start and lost several lengths. The finish for the Juckey Club Handicap was a thriller, Wild Fox coming with a late run to win by a head and give the Chokebore Lodge stable its eleventh win in the race. She ran a track record and finished half a head tn front of Not- Out and Hearth, who deadheated . • There was an unfortunate accident in the opening event, the For*. Cooper Hurdles, The Wrecker and Recollection falling at the second fence in front ot the stands. The Wrecker broke hie back and was destroyed, and his rider, L. Gough, was rolled on by Recollection and badly injured. He was taken to hospital and in the evening his condition was reported to be serious The totalizator handed £52,832, compared with £42,822/10/- on Oaks Day last year.

Double for Master Lackham.

Master Lackham made light work of his rise of 111 b. to win a double, scoring an easy win in the Port Cooper Hurdle Handicap. There was a bad smash at the second fence in front of the Lcger stand, Recollection and Ike Wrecker falling. Flame Queen made the pace along the back, but Master Lackham moved up to her approaching the home turn. He took charge before jumping the last fence and won easily by three lengths from Merry Simon, who finished on to beat the tiring Flame Queen by a length.

Dominate Overcomes Difficulties.

Dominate, an favourite, had to overcome many difficulties betore winmn" the Spring Nursery Handicap. He aLd" Alpine collided at the start, bo h losing several lengths, and when the ire ran toward the false rail Dominate was still four lengths from Koi Ragl, who was out in front setting a hot pace. When Stewart sat down to ride Dominate he ran in and nearly struck Silver If ox S rear but once pulled out he finished on much better than the others and won handsomely -by a length going away. Retriever, who trailed Koi Kagt to the distance; was second, holding off a late run from Cross Question, a daughter of the Stewards’ Handicap winner, Itulalie, and having her first start. Oaks Not A Test Of Stamina.

The race for the New Zealand Oaks Stakes was not made a true test of stamina, the whole field pulling hard for the first mile with Gay Genet tn the lead from Patria and the others bunched behind them. Salutation moved up at the half mile to trail the leaders into the straight and she was fotiowed about two lengths away by Vin D’Honneur, who lost several lengths at the start through interference from Solerity. At the last furlong Salutation got clear and was tackled by Vin D’Honneur, who was inclined to bang in, but the advantage secured at the turn stood to Salutation, who won by a short halt length fiom Y 1 D’Honneur, who would have been better suited by a truer pace. She might even have won with an even dispatch. 1 leebe d’Or ran a good race to finish third nearly two lengths behind the first pair and Fatria was fourth. Solerity, well back, beat the others. Gay Genet tired before reaching the home turn. Track Record In Big Mile.

Wild Fox, who was still eligible for hack races, registered a track record to win the Jockey Club Handicap, an event in which her stable has an outstanding record. She was one of the last into the straight but she came with a wet sail wide out on the track and got up to win by half a head from Not Out and Hearth, who were fighting out a desperate battle over the last furlong and dead-heated for second. Don’t Forget led Treasurer, Not Out and Hearth to the home turn, ivhere Hearth and Not Out went ahead, and thenstruggle, locked together, had the crowd wildly excited, when Wild Fox flashed up with her brilliant run.- Wild Fox has been an unlucky mare throughout her career, but she was fully compensated today, her finishing effort to break Catalogue’s track record being one of the most brilliant of the meeting. King’s Toast finished a little better than Siglow and Don't Forget to take fourth place, but the others were well beaten. Corn Prince missed the jump out.

Great Finish in Canterbury Cup.

The finish of the Canterbury Cup was one of the best in the history of the race, Wardress, Lambourn, and Rakanui finishing with half heads between them, with Yogi only a head away fourth. Rakanui and Kentucky made the pace to the straight from Par Avion and Palfrey. Kentucky bled and retired soon after entering the straight, where Lambourn, Yogi and Wardress were all advancing from the back. In the last 100 yards Rakanui and Yogi were hard at it when Lambourn on the outside and Wardress on the inner dived through to join them, and in a hard finish Wardress got the verdict from Lambourn, with Rakanui third and Yogi fourth. They were spread across the track, making it the most, spectacular finish of the meeting. Palfrey and Par Avion did best of the others. Bascule pulled up lame. / The Champ Wins Again.

The Champ, who had beaten the Jockey Handicap winner, Wild Fox, on Cup -Day, was favourite at a good price for the zishley Handicap, which lie won narrowly but in good style. He was about sixth to the course proper, where Dash o’ Dublin, Croupisiuo, Force, Irish Treasure, and Blue Coat were the leaders. In the last furlong Dash o’ Dublin had charge from The Champ, who ran on gamely under the whip, and won by a good neck. These two were three lengths clear of Gunyah, who finished well to head Croupisino for third money. Then came Blue Coat, Silver Sands, Hughsotis, and Hinepo, the last-named being last to the course proper. Daljarrock missed the jump out, and was never prominent. Willow Wood also began badly, and Prince Dolomite took no part in the race. Military Maid All the Way. The Captain Bunsby mare Military Maid, who is owned iu Wellington, led all the way with top weight comfortably to beat the hack stayers in the Otaio Plate, the big hack event of the meeting. Military Maid was followed into the straight by Ackemma, Enticing, Light Cavalry and Kevin, but. none of them could get near the leader, who strode home unchallenged to win by two lengths.

Kevin finished second, holding off a late run by The Joker by a head. Ackemma, who tired in the straight, was two lengths back fourth, and was followed in by Moderate and Good Health, both ot whom came from a long way back. Parchment, the favourite, was next, and never looked likely. Phyto and koxette were never possibilities. Lord Nuffield Wins Last. Rebel Mate, Lord Nuffield and Rakabanga led the field in the Epsom Handicap to the course proper. At the distance Rakahanga reached the front, and she and Lord Nuffield drew away to tight out the finish. In the last few strides Lord Nuffeld did a little better than Rakahanga and beat her a short neck. Enrich ran his best race of the meeting to finish third, three lengths behind the first pair, and St. Cloud was fourth. Rebel Mate tired after passing the false rail. Glaciate, who trailed the leaders to the course proper, bled and was pulled up. Details Of The Racing PORT COOPER HURDLE HANDICAP, ot £3OO.
