SEVEN BASIC TYPES OF MAN
Mr. Hodson’s Address
Mr. Geoffrey Hodson, international lecturer and author, began his sixth series of lectures on Sunday in the Town Hall Concert Chamber, Wellington, with an illuminating analysis of the septenary basis of man and the universe. “Theosophy teaches that there are seven rays of the Divine Life and that these rays cause seven basic types of humanity, thus giving rise to the diverse characteristics shown by men and women,” said Mr. Hodson.
“The first-ray type displays the qualities of will power, strength and courage. They make natural leaders, rulers, statesmen, pioneers, explorers and guides. The second ray displays the qualities of wisdom, love, sympathy- and compassion. They make great philanthropists, reformers, teachers, healers and servants of the race. The third-ray type unfolds the qualities of intelligence, comprehension, mental skill. They make good philosophers, ambassadors, organizers and chess players. The fourth-ray type displays the qualities of harmony, beauty, appreciation of line, form, colour, balance. They make natural artists, often showing artistic powers quite early in life. The lifth-ray type shows forth the qualities of analytical reason, of patient and accurate research, and ever seek wider ami deeper knowledge. They make natural scientists aud mathematicians. The sixth-ray type displays the qualities of one-pointed devotion, of enthusiasm and self-sacrifice in tile service of a cause. They make natural mystics and devotees. They lead great reforms, arc attracted to evangelists and are prepared to accept martyrdom for their chosen ideals. The seventh-ray type displays the qualities of ordered activity, methodical and scientific co-ordination of means to a chosen end', and are fond of ceremonial, pageantry aud the drama. They have leanings toward the occult and like to tap aud harness the hidden forces of nature. "All people have the seven rays in their make-up, but one ray predominates," the speaker continued. •'Self-examination generally reveals a mixture of the qualities of 'tile different rays. This knowledge can be of great assistance in understanding ami co-operating with others in order to draw out the best in them, ami also in the study and building of one's own character. The modern dictators are tirst-ray men, and though it may lie felt that iu their present lives they have fallen victims to their own special tendencies, ultimately, in the course of perhaps many scores of lives, these defects will be transmuted till they find their highest spiritual expression.”
