SUN WITHOUT SPOTS
First Occurrence Of Kind
For Six Years MINIMUM PERIOD NEAR For the first time in six years no spots were observed on the sun for several consecutive days this week. This was reported yesterday by the astronomers at the Carter Observatory, Wellington. It was the first clear disc since July 29, 1935, according to international records. There was a suspicion that the sun was clear for a few hours on July 15 of this year. Sunspots are said to occur in degrees of intensity over average cycles of 11 years. The last maximum on the curve was in 1937, so that a minimum period for sunspots can toe expected next year or in 1943, promising better radio reception for some time. The recently-observed group of sunspots, which was more than the usual outbreak, was unexpected, as it came out of its turn, but has now cleared up.
