TORPEDOED IN THE ATLANTIC

An American Destroyer Damaged CLEARLY IN DEFENCE AREA (By Telegraph.—Press Assu.-Copyright.) WASHINGTON, October 17. The Navy Department announced that,the destroyer Kearny was torpedoed this morning while on patrol duty 350 miles south-west of Iceland. No casualties are reported.

It’was indicated that despite damage tlie destroyer was able to proceed under her own power. Kearney is one of tlie United States's newest destroyers. having been completed last year. She is a vessel of 1630 tons and is commanded by Lieutenant Commander A. L. Danis.

She was attacked hi the same general area as Greer. President Roosevelt said the area was clearly in the American defence zone, but declined otherwise to discuss tlie incident. He said he would leave that to the Navy Department. Excuse By Berlin.

A Berlin spokesman said that a German submarine, which was in no position to establish the nationality of the destroyer, was attacked by Kearney witli depth-charges, and fired torpedoes' in self-defence. The spokesman accused President Roosevelt of “attempting to provoke tin incident in order to incite the American nation to war against Germany.”
