German Onslaught On

Moscow RUSSIAN SUCCESS AT

KALININ

LONDON, October 17. ' The latest news of the fighting at Moscow is given by the war correspondent of “Pravda,” who says that the German onslaught has been slowed down a little by the def aiders at the city approaches. The correspondent also speaks of Russian successes at Kalinin. Here Germltn artillery and over 100 tanks supported by aircraft made a terrific effort to smash through the defences.' They succeeded in driving a wedge and then tried to encircle the Russians. Parachute troops were used, but these were annihilated and the Russians took up new positions. During AVednesday and Wednesday night Russian artillery hit back. The Germans were driven back with particularly heavy losses around the railway station, Russian aircraft then took a hand and the whole station platform was soon littered with tlie. bodies of dead German soldiers. Today’s German communique speaks of fierce Russian counter-attacks. It also repeats the Rumanian claim to have captured Odessa and refers to attacks by German aircraft on Russian warships .carrying out evacuation operations. .
