SPRING RACING IN TARANAKI

Stratford Meeting Today

TRENTHAM CANDIDATES (By St. Simon) The Stratford Racing Club's spring meeting will be held at Stratford today. The fields are the best this club has carded for several seasons and they include a number of 'horses for whom engagements have been made at Trentham. Aussie Ra has shown no form for a long time and Rollieker may be the be - ter choice in the Spring Hurdles. Stegai ran well last time out at Hastings and Chiltern and Mamaku are hunters with sufficient speed to give them chances. - likely novice is Kanui te Pai, who has good form on the flat as a hack • Broiefort .Star and Capine have tne best public form of those in the Nursery Handicap who have raced, and , am on= the fresh youngsters having their nr-t start good track trials have been performed by Peter’s Choice, Armaleigh and Bright Gesture. Minority was narrowly 'beaten last start at Laeroa by Foxola, and is more seasoned than some'of the other acceptors. Tuatara raced at Hastings like an improver and the best of the others is Trig Station. He has been running good races up to a mile, and a sprinter of that type: w well suited by the Stratford straight, which is lotig with an uphill finish. Several smart beginners are engaged in the Mahoe Handicap. On New Plymouth form last month Nuna, Miss Phaleron and Prince Plato can all be expected to run well and the speedy Star Mark, though not having raced since May, must be respected as she is brilliant and usually goes well when fresh. The four at the top of the handicap appear to hold the others safely. ... . • Tanrangi and Red Cat will be m demand for the Stratford Handicap. Taurangi won this race two years ago and recently nt Hastings ran pronunent under 9.6 over a mile, being runner-up to her stablemate, Red Cat, who showed on the second day at Hastings that a mile and a quarter is not beyond her. Du Maurier, who has not won a. race since last November, has previously shown winning form at Stratford and the best of the others should be the locallv trained Alexcelia who won well at New Plymouth. Her subsequent failures at Avondale are said to have ifieen due to her inability to handle light handed running. The Budge Memorial for hack stayer, looks like a contest between Mountain Fox and Spliced, with Battledress ft likely contender. He has only won a maiden, but he has shaped like a horse that be well suited by a distance. Va! Per* and Gitana Lass should be the best lightweights. i • A strong field of hacks is engaged in the Farewell Handicap with fresh horses in Tavoy and Martene certain to be in favour because of good recent track ork. Salvation has the best recent perfoimances and Cetewayo has shown improvement in his track work since racing nt New Plymouth in September. Dioiuh beaten at his last start at Mat ton where he weakened in the straight, Come Tine will have good prospects if he runs up to Combined Hunt form, when he beat.
