BOY HARRIERS
Runs At Lyall Bay
To promote interest in cross-country running in schools, two races for boys were held at Lyall Bay on Saturday afternoon. The runs were arranged by ■ the harrier sub-committee of the Wellington centre of the New* Zealand . Amateur Athletic Association. Good form was shown by primary school boys, 14 years and under, in a 2J-mile run. and over a difficult 34-mile journey, boys 17 years and under made times which compared favourably with those recorded in the
provincial junior cross-country championships. Twenty-four runners representing four secondary schools competed in the longer race. Conditions wore extremely difficult. The course led for a mile along the heavy sands of the beach before entering paddocks bogged by recent rains, and then back to lhe finishing point on Beach Road. Times and placings were: Pay (Technical). 26.34. 1; Backhouse (R'ono-otni), 26.49, 2; Tomlin (Rongotai), "57.|17. 3; Gray (Scots), 27.32. 4. Pay took the lead early and maintained it throughout, but Backhouse was challenging most of the way. Two and a half miles in a strong wind and through a swamp tired many of the 30 starters in the event for boys. 14 years and under.
