WOMEN POLICE
Strictly speaking the appointment of women in the police.foice is not an innovation in New Zealand. The experiment was tiled m Wellington many years ago when a policewoman in inconspicuous uniform was given patrol duties in the parks, railway stations, and the wharves. But the experiment lapsed before it was possible to assess the real value of women in this sphere of duty. It is now to be tried again, but on a systematic plan that should, enable then capacity to be thoroughly tested. The ten women appointed will re auxiliary to the detective staff, and will not wear uniform. I icy have been through a special course of training to fit them for their special duties of looking after the safety of women and chudien. Here they should have scope .for their special qualities, as women. Much of their success will necessarily depend upon the sympathetic and helpful co-operation of the public.
