CHESS COUNCIL
Meeting In Wellington Fifteen clubs were represented at a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Chess Association, held in "Wellington. The president, Mr. H. O. Browne, Auckland, was also present. Mr. A. T. Craven, the local vice-president, was in the chair. Mr. "W. A. Dobson represented the N-Z. Chess Correspondence Association. Mr. W. "White was appointed delegate for the South Canterbury Chess Club in place of Mr. R. G. "Wade, who has left Wellington on extended sick leave. The report of the hon. treasurer, Mr. H, P. Yarrell, showed the association’s finances to be in a sound position. The hon. secretary, Mr. J. C. McCrea, stated that 28 sets of bakelite chessmen were imported recently from Australia, of which 22 had already heen sold. Subscription lists have been issued in aid of New Zealand’s fifty-first congress, ■which is to be held in Auckland during the Christmas holidays. Play will begin on Boxing Day. and is expected to conclude on January 3. Entries for the New Zealand championship tourney should reach Mr. McCrea not later than December 1. accompanied by the necessary fee (if any) and evidence of the nominee’s playing strength. Entries for the subsidiary tourneys will close on December 15. though the management committee may accept entries for these additional tourneys at any time up to the first day’s play. A remit was adopted enabling players who tie for the New Zealand championship to decide the title by n match of three games, if they so desire. Tn the past there has only been provision for a “sudden death” elimination.
