COST OF SCHEME
£200,000 More Than The Original Estimate MINISTER’S OPINION An estimate that the total cost of the general medical practitioner scheme would be £1,400,000 a year, allowing for a rise of £200,000'over the original estimate of £1,200,000 to pay for the extra fees allowed in recent amendments to the Social Security Amendment Bill, was given by the Minister of Health, Mr. Nordj meyer, during the committee stage of the Bill. “At the outside the increase due to the extra fees should not exceed £200,000,” Mr, Nordmeyer said. “The estimate of the Government tor the general practitioner services was £1,200,000. I think it was on the high side, ■but presuming it was fairly correct the total cost may now amount, in a full year, to £1,400,000.” An Opposition member: Does that include medicine? Mr. Nordmeyer: No. Pharmaceutical benefits were estimated at £340,000 a year, but an. analysis of the cost of the scheme so far shows that it will be well below that figure.
