MAIN ROUTE CLEAR
* Makara’s Isolation Threat Removed MILK DELIVERIES TODAY The clearing of the main route to Makara by 5 p.m. yesterday was the result of an all-day effort by Public Works men who, with modern machinery, worked in the drenching rain to clear the road so that farmers could get their milk into Wellington today. Makara residents generally were appreciative of the reopening of this outlet from Makara South to Wellington, as the district had been threatened with isolation by slips blocking the roads.
The Makara-Johnsonville road is still not open. Last night the Hats were still covered with water which had been there for 48 hours. The stream was six feet above normal and showed signs of rising again. Outbuildings and fences have been swept away, the whole terrain being coated with mud. Slips and wash-outs were coming down the hillsides. However, the situation was reported to be well in hand last night. The children did not go to school yesterday.
