KILLED BY RAILWAY TRUCK
Elderly Wanganui Woman SHUNTER’S ATTEMPT TO SAVE HER Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, October 3. Struck by a rake of trucks on the Somme Parade railway crossing today, an. elderly woman was killed instantaneously. The victim was Mrs. Charlotte Annie Jones, aged 77, Aramoho. Mrs. Jones, who is stated to have been deaf and to have been walking with her head down, was knocked down and run over by the leading truck. A railway porter, Mr. B. Halford, was riding on this truck, and jumped down in an attempt to pull Mrs. Jones out of danger, but was hit by the truck and thrown clear of the line, escaping with a shaking. The danger Mrs. Jones was in was also seen by Mrs. F. M. Burns, proprietress of a shop near the crossing. She was standing on ( the footpath and, seing the rake of trucks approaching, called out to Mrs. Jones and ran toward her. Mrs. Jones was walking on the right-hand footpath of Somme Parade, her intention being to catch a tram at the stopping place on the western side of the level crossing.
