RAYNER’S REVENGE

Hanson Outpointed Over 12 Rounds BRIGHT BOXING DISPLAY Hopping about on his toes like a dancing master, Clarrie Rayner (Marlborough) had his revenge over Tommy Hanson (Wellington) in a professional boxing contest over 12 rounds at the Wellington Town Hall last night. Hanson found Rayner a different proposition from the man he outpointed in the same hall a few weeks back. Trained to the minute, and looking'the picture of physical fitness, the Blenheim veteran moved fast aud played a tattoo to his opponent’s face with a lancelike left in almost every round. His clever footwork also caused Hanson to miss frequently, particularly with the right, and he also took many blows on the gloves and forearms. It waw a clever display of boxing as distinguished from fighting, and the fairsized house, in spite of the rain, enjoyed every round. Both men hit fast, and did some clever evasive work. Rayner did most of the leading, and maintained the initiative throughout, though Hanson made a fight of it. So great was the excitement that a fight started among two of the audience between the ninth and tenth rounds. The last round was very willing. Realizing that he was behind on points, Hanson took the aggressive, hut Rayner met him more than halfway, and a clever display of scientific boxing ended to thunders of applause. Hanson scaled 9.8 i and Rayner 9.7. Captain P. G. Thomson made an efficient referee. Amateur Preliminaries. F. Moyes (Newtown), 11.2}, knocked out A. Doak (Training College). 10.114, in the third round; T. Coll (Tracy’s), 12.0. outpointed F. Baker (Training College), 11.7, in a stirring contest; C. McKenzie (Railway), 11. G, outpointed L. Burns (Newtown), 10.0, in a hard-hit-ting bout; A. Gill (Hedberg’s), 8.12, outpointed T- Taylor (Railway), 8.7, in a contest which greatly pleased the crowd; .1. Colvin (Hedberg’s), 10.0, outpointed IT. Carbin (Galleys), 9.8, in a clever spar. Grant interest attached to the contest, between Don Mnllett, Waiouru camp, and A. McDonald, of the Royal Air Force: Mulletl. who scaled 14.0. was too big and husky for his opponent, whose weight, was only 11.13, and when Mtillelt. dropped his man in the second round the referee stopped the contest and awarded the decision to Muliett. MacDonald, who liails from AVaihi. and lias done a good deal of boxing in Auckland, proved himself a good two-handed fighter, but Muliett was 100 heavy for him. Mr. Phin Slone refereed.
