Vice-Regal. Government House, Wellington, October 1. His Excellency the Governor-Gener-al presided at a meeting of the Executive Council this morning. Mr. A. E. Mabin, Wellington, has been re-elected president of the New Zealand Wool Brokers’ Association. He has previously occupied that position on 10 occasions. Mr. H. O. Garlick, an executive engineer of the Public Works Department, Nigeria, and formerly of Auckland, is visiting New Zealand on furlough. Mr. Garlick went overseas about five years ago. Mr. C. F. Bennett and Mr. J. Stanton arrived at Wellington from Auckland yesterday to give evidence in connexion with the Auckland Community Health Centre Bill, now before the House of Representatives. Dr. C. H. Kellaway, director of the Hall Medical Research Institute, Melbourne, left from Auckland by the Honolulu Clipper on Tuesday for the United States and Britain on a special medical research mission for the Australian Government.
Mr, W. Brooke-Taylor, who has been made a life member of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, has acted as auditor for the club for the past 30 years, besides having been an enthusiastic yachtsman. Mr. Brooke-Taylor is now 89 years old. Mr. W. G. Tweedie, mayor of Timaru, was appointed New Zealand Red Cross Commissioner in the Middle East at a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Red Cross Society yesterday. He served in the last war with the Medical Corps with the rank of captain and was awarded the M.B.E. for his services, lie will leave for the Middle East as soon as possible. Mr. Thomas G. Cox, supervisor of the accountant’s branch of the General Post Office, who is retiring after completing over 40 years’ service, was met by the staff of the branch. Mr. P. Cutforth, director of accounts, in making a presentation to Sir. Cox, referred to the excellent standard of his work in the accountant’s branch, and added that the department regretted the loss of the services of such a capable officer, particularly at a time When so many of the staff were on active service. In replying, Mr. Cox recalled the fact that on his joining the department at the Lower Hutt post office the staff there consisted of four officers; today it numbered a bout-50.;
