HAWKE’S BAY RACES

Opening Of Spring Meeting HASTINGS STAKES TODAY (By St. Simon.) The spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club will open at Hastings today. The card comprises seven races and includes the Hastings Stakes, which will introduce a fresh batch of two-yeai-olds to the public. Though the fields are largely confined to district stables, H. Dulieu with a team from New Plymouth, and D. T. Marks, from Fordell, will be present, and there are many fresh horses to come in on the second day on Saturday. Stella Lux, Lucullus Boy and Vengeance are a trio assured of support in the Hollycombe Hurdles. Tidewaiter represents better class, but is well up in tne weights. Mataroa may, need the race, and Agog, who raced recently on the flat, has shown no form as a hurdler for a Cheddington will carry plenty of sup-port-In thfbig maiden field if he » produced there in preference to the hack sprint. He was unlucky recently at Marton and should do better on his home track. Condole galloped well with Centrepoise on Tuesday revealing that she is improving, and others in the field who have shown placed form are Cypnne, Sivana and Uganda. . The Otane Hack Handicap is an open race, with Roeon. Blandisher and Burma all making strong appeal. Grand Chase has raced well in his three appearances this season and the form of Tea Lord and Ruling Moments will be considered also. The Hastings Stakes gives promise of an interesting contest. Of the 14 on the card only two, Foreign Princess and Ozel, have had experience, and the best form is that of Foreign Princess, who wao ■ the runner-up to Indian feign at Marton. Travancore is believed to be tne best of the local horses. He suffered a slight injury at the weekend, but w ben tried on Tuesday he appeared to be all ri"ht and is considered a probable starter. Dashup, Palora and Prairie Girl have also shown speed in their work. Taurangi and Red Cat will be bracketed in the Hastings Spring Handicap. Taurangi probably will need further racing before she can be expected to show any return to form, but Red Cat should perform well. Though most of her racing has been done at sprinting, she was running on. well to win over seven furlongs at Feilding at Easter. Centrepoise has galloped well during the past week, and if he stands up to his final work he will be one of the best prospects. Unsoundness has prevented him. from taking a prominent part in handicap racing, but he is nicely weighted at 8.5, and a reproduction of his best form would give him a bright chance. Gay Mimic, a winner at Te Aroha, Master Cyklon, who is a very fit horse, Native Chief, ana Hallev will all carry good support, specially Native Chief if he is forward, for his form last, season was excellent in the hack division, and he should do well

under the light scale in open company. Laughing Song and Malacca are proved staying hacks who will make strong appeal in the Epsom Handicap. Gay Genet is an interesting runner, for she showed brilliant speed as a two-year-old and will only need to run on to have the field tied up. Spliced has been running honest races, and among the others Arabic, Katesbridge and Tashi Lama will also have a fallowing. The Homewood Flying Handicap looks likely to be fought out between Burra Sahib and Battlegain. . The three-year-old form has been good to follow. in handicaps this season, and with the improvement he has made since he raced at Wanganui, Burra Sahib should be ready to open his account for the new season. Battlegain, on Wanganui form, when beaten narrowly by Duncannon and Augment, should be the hard one for them nil to bent. Tuatara usually does well when fresh, and the consistent battler, Screen Star, will not be neglectBetting will be win and place, and the following horses will he well supported: Hollycombe Hurdles — Tidewaiter. Stella Lux. Duenllus Boy. Imperial Plate —Cheddington, Condole. Cyprine. Otane Handicap—Burma, Blandisher, Grand Chase. . Hastings Slakes—Foreign Princess, Travancore. Palora. . Spring Handicap—Centrepoise, Native Chief. Gay Mimic. Epsom Handicap—Spliced. Malacca. Gav Genet. Flying Handicap—Burra Sahib. Battlegain.' Tuatara. The card is as follows: —

YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, October 1. After three weeks of fine weather the track is covered with a thick sole of grass and should be fast for the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting tomorrow. This evening clouds were in evidence Duram seemed unlikely. This morning a few horses were given pipe-openers. Laughing Song easily recorded 51 for four. Mataroa, moving scratchily over the first furlong, came home solidly to run once round in 1.40. Pulling verv hard and looking m great order. Saxon Tor reeled off four in under 52. Battle Gain, who was very sore when pulled up, registered 505 for the same distance. Travancore was worked m the afternoon, again showing no outward eliect from his recent hock mishap. He is definitely to start in the Hastings Stakes. SON OF HYPERION FOR N.Z. The Hyperion colt Tartarus, who has been acquired in England for Mr._ fe.
