WAIRARAPA CUP TO AURORA’S STAR
Majority Wins Sprint KEVIN CHAMPION HACK (By The Watcher.)
The change of date from spring by the Carterton Racing Club for its annual meeting was fully JuMi tied bv the result of the annual meeting on Saturday. Not only were there better fields, but in spite of unfavourable weather there was a good attendance, including a train load from Wellington, and the totalizator turnover nearly doub.ea on that at the fixture held last autumn. Had the weather been better there is no doubt the meeting would have been an outstanding success. . The only single dividend field of the day was in the Wairarapa County Cup which was won by- Aurora s Star. Majority scored in the sprint and the Bunny Memorial Champion Hack was won by Kevin. Handsome trophies accompanied the stake in the County Cup and in the Champion Hack, the Bunny _ Memom! Ribbon being also won by Kevin. Ownertrainer J. J- Waller received the cup trophy and Miss Murphy received the Champion Hack trophy and Memorial ribbon for her father. There was also a mystery trophy for the jockey makin, most points for places, during the day and it was won bv 'W. J■ Broughton with nine points (three firsts and a third), with P. Burgess and M. Caddy joint riSj-ners-up with five points each. lhe trophy turned out tO I be aa attache case. An interesting race was the Juvenile Handicap in which nine youngsters having their first race participated. It was won by Mr. Ralph Stewart’s colt Indian Sign, who has thrown back distinctly to his Paper Money dam. The busiest man on the course was T. R. George, who has his active team at present in tra’ißing on the Carterton course. He had a field day. He started 22 horses in seven races with the followin- results:—Race 1, three starters, first and second; race 2, two starters, second and fourth ; race 4, three starters, second, third and fourth; race 5, five starters, first, second, third and fourth; race b, three starters, first and second; race 7, three starters, second and third; race 8, three starters, first, second and third The weather was fine but overcast after early morning rain till after the third race when intermittent light ram fell till the seventh race when it cleared. The race track' was soft and slow but in good ° r 'Phe totalizator handled £9339. The autumn turnover was £4002/10/-. Under the weather conditions the club has every reason, to feel’satisfied with this result, and a great deal is due to the hard working and energetic secretary, Mr. H. Mortenson. _ Outsiders Prevail.
T. George started three maidens in the opening event and Broughton’s mount Olein’was the most fancied but she was never prominent. On the other hand the neglected pair Lord Defoe and Group!sino staged a two-horse race and eclipsed the field. Croupisino jumped away best but was soon joined by Lord Defoe who wore down his rival in the run home, lhe favourites Te Mgrua and Molly Malone were next a long way back. The Favourite Decisively. The favourite Red Dash had a decisive win in the Gladstone Hack. Sports Flash and The Whipper made the running but Red Dash moved up on the turn and ran, away in the straight. The Whipper just held on against Ruling Moments in an extremejy close finish for second. Ruling Moments would been second had he not been disappointed when looking for an opening on the rails in the straight. . Raana Too Good. Raana was a class above his highweight opponents. Ridden in behind he moved up approaching the home turn and would have won much more comfortably had his rider not broken an iron entering the straight. Aurora’s Star’s Cup. Aurora’s Star, favourite for the County. Cup, won only after a stern struggle with Trench Law, and there is little doubt the latter would have won had his rider allowed him to stride along when he was pulling double out in front with Beau Ciel. As it was Aurora’s Star was ad out to hold him off in the lead. Winner Bred by Owner. The juvenile event was an interesting race, and was won by the bracketed favourite Indian Sign, a colt bred by his owner, Mr. Ralph Stewart. Gynerio jumped away best but Incident and Indian Sign' showed more early dash and Indian Sign led into the straight to run on and win comfortably from Gynerio who came on again well at the end. He was nearly defeated for second, however, by the fast-tiuisbing Broadcaster, a longstriding colt who came home very strongly after being sent back frojp a handy position on the turn. There is no doubt he would have seriously troubled the winner. Incident weakened and the others were never likely. Martian Fox jumped away from the rising tapes and took no part in the race. Kevin's Champion Hack.
Great Night endeavoured to steal away from the field in the Bunny Memorial Champion Hack, and half way through the running was well clear. Kevin, however, gradually reduced the gap and, closing up entering the straight, went on to win decisively. Great Night held on from the favourite Firgt Bound, who never looked like doing better, and Kinkajou was fourth. Majority AH the Way.
Majority, enjoying a 71b. allowance, showed most of his old dash in winning the open sprint all the way. Duncannon went after him early, but the effort told in the straight. Par Avion chased the winner home with a solid though ineffectual ruu. Par Avion was in the ruck for the first two furlongs, but ouce he extricated himself he finished very solidly and was responsible for a very fine performance. Happy Ending finished very strongly into fourth place. Pay Roll showed a lot of pace to run up handy on the turn, but she died away again. First Out, First Home. Beau Contour jumped away very smartly in the concluding hack scurry, and was always going like a winner. Erinscourt looked dangerous when he ran up entering the. straight, but he could not quite manage the job. Dungloe and Daljarroek both finished well from the back. Neither jumped awaV well, and Daljarroek, after running up handy on the turn nearly got knocked oyer. There is no doubt he would have been hard to beat with a good run. The Hawke's Bay representative Ex-Pupil, a surprising favourite, went with the winner to the turn and then fell back. Details Of The Racing MAIDEN PLATE, of £100; weight, 5.7.
