SERIOUS ENGLISH TRAIN CRASH

Thirty-Eight Casualties

(Received September 15, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 14.

Awakening nearly every villager, a crash occurred between two passenger trains at Holmes Chapel, between Crewe and Manchester, early this morning. It is feared that eight passengers were killed and 30 injured.

The wartime defence services operated immediately. The local Home Guard and others from first-aid posts were quickly on the scene, which was lit up by searchlights from an adjoining field. Both trains came from Crewe, one being stationary when the impact occurred. A passenger who participated in the rescue work said there were some real heroes among the injured. The driver and fireman in the moving train escaped uninjured by jumping to the embankment.
