Anti-War Element In Berlin ARRESTS IN EUROPE (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Received Sept. 14, 7 p.m.) LONDON,' Sept. 13. An anti-war demonstration in a Berlin cinema, in which storm troops fired, killing and wounding a number of the' audience, is reported from the German frontier. The audience, during the showing of a particularly gruesome picture shouted: “We do not want war pictures 1 We do not want war 1” The film was stopped and the lights were turned on. and .police gave a warning against further demonstrations, after which the showing was resumed. Shouts were again heard. The doors suddenly opened as S.S. men walked in and firing was heard. Oslo radio reports that more Norwegian trade unions leaders and journalists have been given sentences ranging from death to 15 years’ imprisonment. The death sentences have been commuted on condition that there arc no further incidents. Vichy Voices Anxiety. Official sources in Vichy describe the continued bloody incidents in 1 rance as “a real Communist conspiracy, the danger which nobody should underestimate.” . The authorities are struggling to maintain order in the occupied and unoccupied zones. One thousand persons were arrested at La Rochelle during raids on cafes and restaurants. . lhe German military governor of Paris announced that the holders of unauthorized firearms are liable to execution. Marshal Petain has commuted death sentences imposed on two alleged Communists at Clermont-Ferrand. It was announced from Vichy yesterday that 34,000 people are now in prisons and concentration camps. The Belgian newspaper “Brusse.er Zeitung” says that a man and two women were sentenced to death for hiding a wounded R.A.F. pilot who escaped from a German hospital. The defence proved that the accused were not antagonistic to Germany, but the Court imposed the death sentence because false humanity is intolerable. The Moscow radio reports that terrorism is increasing in Finland, where the Democrats are A number were arrested for criticising the war. . The German-controlled Serbian Government has received permission to form an army of 17,000, plus appropriate numbers of gendarmes and military police.
