WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Visits Of Auckland And Hutt Teams The Wellington Basketball Association, in spite of the rain, held a gala day on Saturday. Auckland sent, down their second first grade Representative team and Hutt Valley sent in four representative teams. It was possible to use an inside court, und, though games were played in shorter spells, all were finished. Hutt Valley first team played the Auckland team. Auckland had the throw i off, but lost it in the centre, the ball went up and down the field before either ■. team had a chance to score. Both teams took some time to settle down on the wooden floor and a good ring was fastened to the wall without a goal-post. Hutt Valley managed to hold Auckland for most of the first half and the score would have been more even had Hutt Valley been able to score when they had opportunities. During the second halt Auckland dominated the play to win 17-13. Matches With Hutt Valley. Two of 'Wellington’s junior teams, Abelco. winner of fourth junior, and Thorndon 0.5., winners fifth grade this season, had a chance of a representative match, and played Hutt Valley junior representative teams. It was a great experience for these young players, and they thoroughly enjoyed their games. Most of the game consisted of passing up and down the field. A number of chances ot scoring were missed, again probably because of the difficulty in seeing the ring. Thorndon O.G. won, and Abelco lost. Hutt Valley A then played 'Wellington third grade representatives. In the first half both teams had a good deal of the ball, but the visitors were much more accurate in shooting. In the second half 'Wellington managed to put in several scores in succession, but the more experienced Hutt players made fewer mistakes, and the visitors won 18-10. The fourth grade representatives had a very interesting game against Hutt Valley junior A, in which the teams were evenly matched. If was anyone’s game till well on when the home team pushed ahead to win by three goals. Wellington Beats Auckland. In the game between the Auckland representative team and Wellington second senior A team, Auckland had the throw, but lost the ball from the centre. The ball went up and down the field till J. Stanley was in a position to shoot, but failed. 'The ball went straight to S. Frederic, who scored. Auckland then scored from Wellington’s throw-off, and then each scored to 3-all. Then I’. Wall scored twice in succession, followed by a far out shot by 8. Frederic. Both teams then had chances, but Wellington did not get nearer than one behind, and the first spell finished in Auckland's favour. In the second half the game livened up considerably and there was some very good ■ passing mid interception on both sides. Wellington, because of the very accurate shooting of 8. Frederic, drew even and with about five minutes to go attacked strongly to win by four goals. After the games all the teams were entertained at afternoon tea. The president of the Wellington Basketball Association, Miss 'Wharton, welcomed the guests, saying how much the Wellington teams had enjoyed the opportunity of these extra games. Miss Stanley (captain of the Auckland teams and Mrs. Ballard (manager of the Hutt teams) thanked the Wellington association for its hospitality. Both associations had enjoyed the day and were grateful for being able to play under cover. The finals of the third and fourth grades were postponed till next Saturday.
