HAPPY AUGURY IN IRAN
Russians’ Scrupulous Attitude BRITISH CONFIDENCE (British Onicial Wireless and Press Assn.) (Received Sept. 12, 7 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 11. “The Tinies” says: “A particularly welcome feature of the Iranian campaign has been the close cooperation maintained between the British and Russian armies and .the British and Russian political authorities. The advance on both sides was perfectly timed and the junction effected with complete precision. There has been the fullest accord between British and Russian ; policy both as to the immediate measures taken and to the undertakings for the future. “The enemy propagandists who professed to see in the Anglo-Russian alliance a nefarious scheme for subjugating the world to the supposed Bolshevist menace will find nothing to support them in exemplary restraint and scrupulous regard for the interests of . the Iranian people which has been exhibited by the Sovipt authorities in Northern Iran. “It is good news that General Wavell has just visited the country and been in touch with the Soviet army commanders. The operations in Iran and the and cordial relations established between the British and Russian forces should serve as a happy precedent for increased confidence and more intimate collaboration in other fields.” Nazis’ Deep Boots. The problem of rounding up and expelling the German “fifth column” in Iran will be a complicated one, says the Teheran correspondent of the “Daily Mail.” Their work in corrupting certain officials and army officers has gone deep. Many key positions throughout the country are still filled by Iranians who have been trained and prepared by the Germans to carry on for them. The Russians, according to reliable reports, are applying realistic methods, with the result that 1100 of the 2000 Germans in Iran have failed to reach Teheran. It is believed that they were caught in the Soviet-occupied provinces and are already en route to Siberia. On the other hand a message from Teheran says that so far only 50 Germans from Iran have been interned by the Russians. The Russians have exempted Bulgarians in Iran from the order to give themselves up. Those Germans in Teheran whose names are on the British and Soviet “black lists” will be handed over for internment. The British authorities have already arranged to send 225 pf them to India.
“Tyrant’s Excess."
It is reported from a reliable source , that on the day of the British and Soviet invasions, the Shah, who has become a medieval tyrant, thrashed the War Minister in the presence of the rest of the Cabinet and later had him shot out of hand.
A report from Simla states that Britain and Russia have been granted the control of all vital means of communication, including the tnms-Iranian railway, under the agreement with Iran.
