WIDELY ACCLAIMED

London Press Comment GERMANY’S REACTION

LONDON, September 12. President Roosevelt's speech has been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic and throughout the British Commonwealth. The London “Daliy Express” describes it as America’s reply to Axis piracy and emphasizes that the rreslcent has made it clear that protection will be given to ships of any nationality engaged in commerce in American waters. The newspaper says this is an immense step toward getting American arms and food to Britain. “The next step is up to Hitler, it says. “Germany knows well the dangers. She knows that American arms are produced in abundance. Today has been a big day for the democratic cause. It is a decisive day in the war.” The “News Chronicle” says: "This means that four-fifths of tlie Atlantic is now closed to the Axis. It may operate there only at the risk of being shot at by United States warships and planes. Hitler’s problem is to decide which is the greater risk. The President’s declaration puts Berlin on the spot, and is of immediate practical advantage to the Allies." Neutrality Act Scrapped. The “Washington Post” says: “Our navy is now a direct participant in the Battle of the Atlantic.” The “St. Louis Globe” says the President lias scrapped the Neutrality Act and lias told Hitler he can have a shooting war if he wants one. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr. Faddcn, described Urn speech as a great tonic to the people of Britain and to all the people of the American continent. “Mr. Roosevelt has underlined certain stark facts that are abundantly clear.” The first German comment shows that Hitler understands very clearly what Mr. Roosevelt means. A broadcast from Zeissen says that Mr. Roosevelt has had the cheek to demand Unit Germany and Italy should permit the United States to supply the Soviet Union and Britain witli war materials without retaliation. It accuses him of having incited most of the nations to declare war on the Axis and yet puts all the blame on Germany.
