PRIVATE SECRETARY RETIRES

Career Of Mr. S. Y. Jones After 40 years’ service in different Government departments, including many years as a prominent member of the secretarial staff at Parliament Buildings, Mr. S. Y. Jones, chief private secretary to the Minister of Labour and Mines, Mr. Webb, retired on superannuation yesterday. Mr Jones joined the Post and Telegraph Department as a messenger in Palmerston North, and after 18 months’ service was transferred to the Auckland telegraph office. He worked subsequently at the Wellington office for 10 years, when he was seconded to the official staff, at Government House, serving under three Governors-General, the late Lord Liverpool, the late Viscount Jellicoe and Sir Charles Fergusson. After leaving Government House Mr. Jones was transferred to the secretarial corps, joining the staff of the then Minister of Finance and Customs, Mr. Downie Stewart. Other Ministers with whom he served were the late Sir Francis Dillon Bell, the late Sir Thomas Sidey, the late Sir James Parr, the Hon. R. Masters, the Hon. M. Fagan. In more recent years Mr. Jones has been chief private secretary to Mr. Webb.
