NOVEL WITH A PURPOSE
“Poor Relief” or “The Triumph of Willie Pond,” by Caroline Slade (London: Constable). “Poor Relief” is not a novel to be read by those in search merely of entertainment. It is a novel with a purpose, and it sticks grimly to its purpose throughout, relentlessly, with no effort to make things comfortable for the reader, any more than they are comfortable for the unfortunate characters of the book. This is the story of a family living in the slums of an American town and, because of succeeding misfortunes, dependent upon organized charity. Mrs. Slade follows the fortunes of the members of this family through all their troubles, shows the effects of soulless relief administration and presents a tragedy pitiable in the extreme, yet absorbing, instinct with sympathy in spite of its ruthless realism—a human document if ever there was one.
